This week's links.
– I don't know how I missed the original call for submissions, but Lipglossipping had an awesome contest where you could submit your interpretation of Paris using beauty products. There were some truly amazing ideas.
– So many of these food theme days! Monday we had National Homemade Cookie Day, and Thursday was both National Taco Day and National Vodka Day. And as I mentioned last year, this whole month is National Pizza Month.
– How pretty is the packaging for this new vegan hair care line? Pretty bird, pretty bird.
– ABBA is getting their very own museum. High time, methinks.
– Here's something I didn't think of collecting: vintage beauty books. This one from the '70s sounds particularly juicy.
– So bummed!! The founder of my favorite clothing store in the whole wide world (seriously, I've been in their stores in no fewer than 4 countries and have posted about it here, here, and here) made a racist, xenophobic comment. :( How incredibly disappointing for huge fans such as myself.
– On the lighter side, here's a handy guide to everything you need to know about the new season of Arrested Development. You can also win a chance to be one of six lucky walk-ons!
– Halloween's coming and there are so many scary movies I want to see. VHS, Sinister, Paranormal Activity 4 are at the top of my list, plus ones that have been out for a while (Human Centipede 2, Cabin in the Woods, The Apparition and The Possession).
– It's finally feeling like fall here, so Museum Advisory Committee member Sailor Babo wishes everyone a happy decorative gourd season.
This week's links, plus a few pics of my new boots!
– Here's another exhibition on punk, this time focusing on graphic design and drawings.
– Next time I visit my parents I think I'll have to make a trip to this pizza museum.
– The Onion has a hilarious short piece on people feeling guilty for looking at paintings too fast.
– Speaking of The Onion, I wish this was fake news but sadly, it's real: The Ontario College of Art & Design forced its students to fork over $180 for an art history text book that doesn't contain any images. WTF??
– Interesting story on the growing number of South Korean men who wear makeup.
– The NARS/Andy Warhol collection was up in its entirety on Gilt earlier this week and included some exclusive collectibles. Too bad Gilt wouldn't donate the set to the Museum. I'm a collector, you think they'd want me to preserve it for posterity, right?
– Baltimore is the nation's third dirtiest city. Seems about right, judging from the amount of trash that regularly gets left on our front steps. But at least Hampden made it to the top 20 hippest neighborhoods in the U.S.
– I love these silly theme days. The 18th was National Cheeseburger Day, while the 19th, as everyone knows, was National Talk Like a Pirate Day.
– Finally, here are some lovely new boots my very sweet husband treated me to.
And here they are modeled by the Museum's Rights and Reproductions Manager, Seasick Sailor Babo.
"I'm king of the world!"
After this picture was taken he started wobbling and then threw up, but fortunately he missed the boots. 😛
What were you into this week?
This week's links.
– Beautiful with Brains shares a bit of beauty history, covering a late 19th-century object known as a "toilet mask".
– How cute is this Arrested Development quote print?
– As sad as I am to see summer go, I must say I am excited for this delectable-looking Philosophy set mentioned by the Beauty Alchemist. Toasty Cabin features shower gels in Whipped Vanilla Topping, Spiced Pumpkin Latte, and Salted Caramel Hot Cocoa. WANT! And buying this set will not prevent me from buying the full-size bottle of Salted Caramel Hot Cocoa, as you're familiar with my Philosophy shower gel obsession.
– Speaking of pumpkin lattes, they're back at Starbucks. It's still pretty warm here but any day now I will be enjoying my first one of the season.
– On the cookie front, Lanvin collaborated with Ladurée to create adorable packaging just in time for Paris fashion week.
– Remember how I was talking about how much I love school and prints/fabrics traditionally associated with it? I think I would give my right arm to see the Ivy Style exhibition at Fashion Institute of Technology, which examines the "Ivy League Look" and "presents three main periods of the look: the interwar years of the 1920s
and 1930s; the post-war era to the end of the 1960s; and the revival
from the 1980s to the present. Focusing almost exclusively on menswear
dating from the early 20th century through today, more than sixty
ensembles, both historic and contemporary, are intermingled in an
environment evocative of an Ivy League university campus." Tweed and varsity jackets and Oxford shirts…I am swooning.
– In other museum news, the American Association of Museums is now the American Alliance of Museums. Yay for new names and logos!
– Education Specialist Cookie Dream Babo, Museum Advisory Committee member Babo's bird and Communications Director Yoyamart Babo (a.k.a. the winged museum staff) were very pleased to see Paul & Joe's fall blushes, which feature birds. They are kindred spirits. (A post on Paul & Joe fall will be coming soon).
What was catching your eye this week?
Please give a warm welcome to the Museum's newest staff member, Power Babo!
I still haven't figured out what the little fella should do around the Museum – I guess after he reveals his super powers to me (besides fetching cookies at light speed) I can determine what else he'd be good at. 🙂
Happy belated 4th of July! I hope everyone had a nice day off full of barbecuing and fireworks watching (and staying as cool as possible during this ungodly heat wave that doesn't seem to want to end). Here's what was catching my eye the past 2 weeks.
– In the spirit of Independence Day, here's a rap about George Washington. "He'll save children but not the British children"…cracks me up every time.
– July is National Ice Cream month, according to Serious Eats. I kicked it off by making pineapple ice cream with caramel sauce. Yummy!
- Great article on how museums get visitor feedback. I think for the Makeup Museum I'd have people leave feedback by writing their comments with eye liners and lipsticks. 🙂
– I was going to do a post on Rescue Beauty Lounge's latest collection, which was inspired by an iconic 20th-century female painter (a collection that draws on an artist is always Makeup Museum gold!), but now I don't feel comfortable writing about it. RBL founder Ji Baek lovingly created a beautiful collection out of pure admiration for the artist and then this happened. I, along with many other art and beauty fans, am pretty angry at the situation.
– It's interesting that more men are buying cosmetics and skincare items intended for women, even though men's grooming products already exist.
– Say it ain't so! A whole exhibition devoted to vajazzling?! Really? Ugh.
– Bloomin' Beauty had a great little write-up of '70s makeup trends.
– But the biggest news is that the Museum will be welcoming a new staff member!!! Say hello to Power Babo!
(image from tomopop.com)
I've pre-ordered him from E-bay and I can't wait till he gets here so I can squeeze him silly introduce him to the other staff. I'm a little sad that I have to order these special edition Babos – I'd love to go in-person to pick them out. All plushie owners know that even though most stuffed animals are mass-produced, the faces can vary, and I want to pick out the one with the best face. When we're talking Babos though, they're all adorable.
What have you all been up to?
Whew, another super busy week flew by. Here are the links.
– Now, you know I spare no expense when it comes to beauty items, but really, Clé de Peau, a $13,000 lotion? For heaven's sake, you could get a host of fancy dermatalogical treatments or even plastic surgery for that price, and I'm sure they'd be more effective than than a moisturizer! At less than 2 oz. per jar, even if one bought all three jars that are being produced, it wouldn't last very long either.
– A local business writer declares Lululemon to be the winner in a battle with Under Armour, which I was glad to read. Baltimore is such an Under Armour town but I hope the tide is turning to Lulu's favor.
– Since Pulp Fiction is the Curator's favorite movie, I greatly enjoyed this remix.
– I have no idea why I didn't see this site before, but it is hilarious.
– Well, duh! I think any makeup addict worth their salt knows how filthy cosmetics counters are, so this isn't really news to us. I hardly ever use the testers at makeup counters and if I do, I only swatch on my hands (never my face) and make sure to thoroughly wash them afterwards.
– Finally, last Sunday Museum Advisory Committee member Sailor Babo visited the tall ships in the Inner Harbor for the Sailabration. You can read all about his adventure here.
How was your week?
Since I totally fell off the blogging wagon last week, links today are from the past 2 weeks. I hope to be more on the ball with posting this week, but I can't promise anything as it's shaping up to be the busiest week I've had in a while. To say my life is in flux would be an understatement. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this huge batch of links.
– I want to get this adorable Marks and Spencer palette for my mom – she loves owls so this would be perfect, but I don't think I can get it stateside. Hmph.
– The Art of Scent exhibition opened at the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC. How about an Art of Makeup exhibition? I know someone who could curate it. 😉
Beautylish rounds up "international Klein blue"-inspired beauty products. I'm embarrassed that as a former art history major I had no idea there was a brilliant shade of blue invented by Yves Klein.
– In the world of themed days, last Friday was National Punch a Hipster Day. I can't decide if I like that more than National Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19). And this past Wednesday was National Running Day.
– This Serious Eats post on Mack's pizza at Wildwood's boardwalk got me nostalgic for my childhood vacations at the Jersey shore.
– '90s woman that I am, I cracked up at these Clueless candles. "You're a virgin who can't drive." "That was way harsh, Tai."
– Love the idea of having a museum mascot. Surely one of the Museum's staff members could fill that role but I couldn't bring myself to choose!
The award for the most exciting beauty news of the week goes to the Shu Uemura/Karl Lagerfeld collaboration coming up for the 2012 holiday season. Can't. Wait.
And the award for the most exciting fashion news of the week goes to my favorite store, who is now FINALLY offering online shopping in the U.S. Previously the only way to get my paws on it, short of a trip abroad or to NYC, was to order by phone from one of the few U.S. stores. My credit card is weeping. Here's my haulage (all shirts), as modeled by museum staff. And I will be picking up more, of course, now that the buying process is easier.
As I mentioned in my post on Anna Sui's pirate-inspired summer collection and as these next 2 pictures will demonstrate, I'm a bit obsessed with skulls. Just a little. 😉
How was your week?
For the fourth post at the Makeup Museum's On the Water week, I'm bringing you MAC's Hey Sailor collection which was released today (but appeared online last week, so that's how I got my stuff already). The theme is pretty much identical to that of MAC's 2008 Naughty Nauticals collection: sexy, vintage pin-up girl-inspired sailor chicks. But this time around the collection is larger and features limited-edition packaging.
Museum Advisory Committee member Sailor Babo was so, so, SO excited for Hey Sailor and I was too. From the time we saw the first ad…
…to when we got a mailer with the pretty sailor lady…
…we had been eagerly anticipating the release. It's finally here and I'm loving the navy and white striped packaging just as much as I did when I first laid eyes on it.
I got the highlighter, which has the same stripe design in pastel shades embossed on the powder:
With flash:
I also got eye shadow in Jaunty because the name reminded me of Sailor Babo's oh so jaunty little hat:
Lipsticks in Red Racer (love the contrast of the red against the blue and white of the case) and To Catch a Sailor:
Riviera Life lip gloss:
And the makeup bag set:
And because I was such a good customer, MAC included 3 temporary tattoos. Aren't they so cute? I think, honestly, the free tattoos were my favorite part of the whole collection. They will make awesome Museum memorabilia.
However, I'm not sure I'm getting them back from you-know-who.
And like Babo with the the Museum's first giveaway, Sailor Babo confused the highlighting powder and eye shadow with cookies. Oh dear.
To see Sailor Babo's full exploration of the collection, you can check out my post at Postcards from Sailor Babo. 🙂
So what do you think, both of the packaging and the colors? Did you buy anything or are you planning to?
This week's links.
– I thought this mural was a nice way of memorializing children's book author Maurice Sendak.
– I'm hoping Christian Louboutin's new makeup line will have a variety of reds to match the soles of the lovely shoes he makes.
– A little teaser video for the Andy Warhol and NARS collaboration, out in the fall.
– An article pleading with Hollywood to stop making Baltimore look bad. (via bmore media)
– Don't forget Mother's Day! Cute cards aplenty here.
– Finally, in case you missed my Tweet, a certain Museum Advisory Committee member has developed a full-blown crush. MAC's Hey Sailor collection just can't get here fast enough for the little scamp!
Have a great weekend!
Whew! Another far too busy week for me. Here are this week's links.
– I'd love to see this Christian Louboutin exhibition at the Design Museum in London. Of course, I might try to run off with the shoes. 😉
– Interesting article on how Pantone does color forecasting.
– I'm in love with Armani's summer Eyes to Kill eye shadows. Stay tuned for a new Armani page as well as reviews and swatches of these shadows in the Product Reviews section.
– I couldn't take my eyes off this gorgeous patisserie in Spain – this is what I envision for the Museum's café.
– Finally, Museum Advisory Committee member Sailor Babo wishes everyone a happy Cinco de Mayo! As you can see, he is greatly enjoying flipping through this book of Mexican street graphics.
