Deep thoughts: On blogging and finding balance

February 5, 2014

Tightrope-walkerToday I'd like take a step back and ask my fellow bloggers how you manage your time.  I've been blogging for over 5 years yet I still struggle with time management.  I have two main things I try to accomplish each week:  work out 4-5 days and write 4 posts.   Seems easy, right?  I work full-time, but with no kids or even a long commute, I'm puzzled as to why I still can't seem to either blog consistently or exercise consistently or both.  No matter how much I plan or schedule, I'm never really on the ball.  It's frustrating, especially when I see bloggers who are busier but can keep up without a hitch.  I guess all of the other little things add up (like seeing friends/family, errands, cleaning, keeping up with over 1,000 blog subscriptions, taking on bigger blog projects like exhibitions), plus I need some time to, you know, just relax with a book or watch a movie.  So that's a decent amount of juggling.  Still, I know I can't be THAT busy.  I'm baffled as to how I can't get more done, nor do I see a solution to the problem.  Admittedly I have a low threshold for busy-ness.  I don't like multitasking or cramming lots of things into one day. Given my disposition and personality, perhaps I'm simply attempting too much while other people can take on much more and not feel stressed…or maybe I'm just lazy.

My question to those of you who work full-time in addition to managing a blog is, simply, how do you do it?  How do you find balance between work, life, and blogging?   I'd love to hear any tips and advice!

  1. Honestly, all can’t be done unless time is sacrificed. And sacrificing means real life could and may suffer if virtual life is to be growing. Unless the virtual life is a business then it becomes part of your real life because it supports you but if it isn’t, then you yourself have to divide the time.
I know I am getting burnt out and there were times when I sacrificed my personal life and wished I had not because I realized it wasn’t worth the trouble.
I do like to be selfish which means I like staying off the net and giving time to myself. I like to be a couch potato. I like to read a good book.
So, how do I juggle virtual with real. I just say no to virtual and say yes to real life!

  3. Yeah, I mean given that blogging is just a hobby for me, not a way to make a living, I guess I shouldn’t worry so much about keeping up with it and focus on other stuff. Still, I do wonder where my time goes! And I really do enjoy blogging, I just wish I had more time to devote to it while still working full-time and getting all my other stuff done.
Thanks so much for stopping by!!

  5. There was a time when I wanted to keep up with blogging frequently (was in one of my resolutions for the last year), but I tried pretty hard to stick to it. I also am NOT THAT BUSY, so can’t figure out why. At the end of the day I told myself blog is just a hobby and blogger also has a life, there’s so much more to life than just typing away LOL and I don’t regret this decision – I now just blog whenever I hv the time or feel like to – no pressure at all! just do whatever your heart feels like (esp when blogging is not a business that earns u $)
(p.s. also have a full time, short commute, not much socializing nights after work, yet i still can’t exercise 2-3 times per week! lol)

  7. Hi Jenni! I’m inclined to agree with you – after all, blogging for me is just for fun and the fun does get sucked out of it if I stress about it, so while I will try to keep up ultimately it’s not a big deal. I’m glad I’m not alone either in feeling that I’m not that busy 24/7 but I still don’t do everything!
Thanks so much for weighing in!
